The Tunisian-Italian medical team successfully performs the first cardiac catheterization surgeries at Rabta hospital

Tunis / Tunisia – A Tunisian and Italian medical team of specialists successfully carried out the first cardiac catheterization operations on Monday in the pediatric cardiac catheterization room installed in the children’s cardiac surgery department of the Rabta hospital in Tunis.

The surgeries were performed on a 7-year-old girl and two infants aged two months and one year and eight months respectively.

Performing such surgeries in Tunisia reduces waiting times for children with heart disease, said Sami Mourali, chairman of the medical committee at Rabta hospital.

The Minister of Health Ali Mrabet indicated for his part, that the realization of the first catheterization surgeries on children dates back more than 20 years in Tunisia in the cardiology departments of other hospitals, but the establishment of a cardiac catheterization room for children suffering from defective heart problems helps to reduce the expenses incurred by the State which covers part of the costs of their treatment abroad.

Italian Ambassador to Tunisia Lorenzo Vanara told the media on this occasion that Italian President Sergio Mattarella had given his instructions to promote cooperation between Tunisia and Italy in the field of health so that relations between The friendship and partnership between the two countries take on a humanitarian aspect. .

The pediatric cardiac catheterization room is the first of its kind in Tunisia and includes a catheterization device acquired as part of a donation from the Italian group San Donato, which manages investments in the health sector.

This device will be used for x-rays and the treatment of heart defects in children.
