Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says the community of Touwsrivier desperately needs basic health services in the area.

The aid organization traveled to the small town on Saturday to provide medical care to residents as part of its outreach work.

The town has 7,000 inhabitants and the nearest hospital is an hour’s drive away.

A team of 40 medical staff, including gynecologists, orthopedic surgeons, paediatricians, general practitioners and dentists, worked around the clock to help as many patients as possible.

Some residents of Touwsrivier feel they have been neglected by government officials in the Western Cape.

Sooliman says it’s important that people in rural parts of the province receive regular medical care to improve their quality of life and give them dignity and hope.

He says Touwsrivier is in dire need of services such as a dental team, an eye care specialist and GPs.

“It’s not rocket science…it’s a simple intervention that could make a huge difference in people’s lives,” he told CapeTalk.

The whole town erupted, literally everyone was waiting outside the school and the healthcare workers were stunned to see a reception like this… There were hundreds waiting for care.

It’s not a competition… I have a good relationship with the Health MEC and the HOD, we do a lot of projects together… there is a very good relationship, but with this relationship, you have to say what which is mandatory.

We took stock, this city requires a lot of dental care… it’s simple things. Why couldn’t a person see for six months when all they need is a 10 minute eye exam and glasses the next day.

It takes more than a mobile [clinic]. We need services for a longer period, we need more qualified medical services. Maybe you should send a team twice a week.
